Congratulations to our second team on reaching the final of the Terrill Trophy. The final will be played at Mutual Circle's venue on Tuesday 6th March. We face the formidable South Birmingham first team who have won the first division title for 5 of the last 6 seasons and currently have a 100% record this season that looks completely unassailable. In the league, they have not lost a single BOARD all season. This final will also be their 4th appearance in 5 years.
The Terrill trophy uses a handicap system. We will get a 3.5 handicap, so we only need 1.5 over the boards. However given their current record that is a near impossible task !
We have nothing to lose and should get some very good games. South Birmingham may feel the pressure as they have to play for wins.

Stourbridge chess club held their annual pre-season blitz tournament on Wednesday 31st August. This gave members an opportunity to sharpen up their play for the forthcoming season. It was no surprise that the club’s top player Jeremy Fallowfield won the 9 round tournament with a perfect 9 out of 9.
Jeremy’s father Nic completed thefamily double by coming equal second with 7½. He tied with in form Eric Horwill.
The Tony Evers friendly match against Halesowen was held on Wednesday 6th July at Stourbridge.
For those members new to Stourbridge the Tony Evers match is the friendliest of friendlies. It is not so much a chess match; more a social event with some chess played.
Despite the Stourbridge players played their socks off and won by a significant margin with the bottom 6 boards all winning.

The Club's Annual General Meeting was held on the 8th June.
The following awards were made:

The following captains were appointed for the forthcoming season. All of them were elected unopposed:
Eric Horwill will be Captain of either BDCL Division 2 or BDCL Division 3.
This will depend on Eric’s grade next season as to which team he will be in.
This leaves a vacancy for either a BDCL Captain. Dave asked for anyone interested to let him know. We are also considering entering a team in one of the Worcestershire leagues.
The overall winner was undefeated Dave Davies with 4.5 out of 5. In the deciding match in the last round he played against tournament organiser Julie Wilson who was on 3 points. Julie gained a slight advantage but pressed too hard for the win. She made an error and was forced to resign a few moves later. Equal second were Don Curry and Julie Wilson on 3 points. The grading prize went to John Loynes who ended on 2½ points after beating higher rated Dave Scriven in the last round.

So Halesowen overcame their grading disadvantage on paper to win the match convincingly. The only Stourbridge player to win a match was Dave Scriven !
Anyway, everyone enjoyed it which is the main thing. A big thank you to Halesowen.
