1. e4 c5 2. f4 Nc6 3. Nf3 d6 {In the Grand Prix attack, Black is usually
advised to play a very quick d5, however by playing d6 he signals his
intention to play a much quieter game, which suits me down to the ground. Of
course d5 can follow at a latter stage but will need preparing and loses a
tempo} 4. Bc4 (4. Bb5 {is often preferred to weaken Black’s Queenside and
give White a small edge}) 4... e6 {e6 is often played before d6 so that d5 can
be played in one go.} 5. Nc3 Nf6 6. d3 g6 {My feeling was that there was no
need to play this as e6 has made room for the bishop already. I feel Be7 is
better} 7. O-O Bg7 8. Qe1 ({In the next few moves e5 is always a possibility
with, according to Fritz, advantage to White. Eg} 8. e5 dxe5 9. fxe5 Nd7) 8...
a6 9. a3 Qe7 10. Kh1 b5 11. Ba2 Bb7 12. e5 {I finally decide to play the
essential move. On reflection I should have played it earlier but my opponent
is messing about anyway, so I decided to put my pieces on their ideal squares
first.} dxe5 13. fxe5 Nd7 $4 {While an obvious looking move, this creates many
more difficulties for Black} (13... Ng4 {is better} 14. Bf4 Nd4 15. Nxd4 cxd4)
14. Bg5 Qf8 15. Bf4 ({Missing my own point} 15. Ne4 $1 Ndxe5 16. Nxe5 Bxe5 17.
Bxe6) 15... Bh6 {Trying to untangle the mess} 16. Bg3 Qg7 17. Ne4 O-O {
Alleviating some of the pressure on f7, though not for long} 18. Nd6 Rab8 19.
Qe2 Rfd8 20. Rae1 (20. Nxf7 {Sacking the Knight on f7 already looks inviting
and with the rook out the way should be played immediately}) 20... Ne7 21. Nxf7
Rf8 22. Nxh6+ Qxh6 23. Bxe6+ Kh8 24. Bxd7 Rbd8 25. e6 Bc8 26. Bxc8 Rxc8 27. Ne5
Kg8 28. Nf7 Qh5 29. Qxh5 gxh5 30. Be5 Rc6 $4 {With seconds remaining to make
his time control Black makes the worst error there is. h6 is the only real move
} 31. Nh6# 1-0
